Penguin Book Cover Concepts

A project commissioned by Penguin Books USA to create a variety of cover design options for a young adult book,Between Shades of Gray, by author Ruta Sepetys.

Set in 1941, the story focusses on a young Liberian girl who was sent to a prison camp in Siberia. Armed only with her artistic skills and quick wits, the book takes readers on an emotional journey as she strives to reconnect with her family, making some resourceful new friends along the way.

My variety of approaches included hand-drawn elements, stencil art, powdered graphite, and collage overlaid on digitally captured textures. All expressing the overarching unsettled feeling that the book conveys, and focussing in on specific aspects of the storyline.
