Vector Easy Button

The Easy Button is the most iconic element of the Staples® brand. The problem was that all the digital assets for it were actual photographs. This meant that for any large-format marketing (posters, billboards etc.), the design team often had to load up 400mb+ versions of the device into their design files. So, inspired by some of the photo-realistic vector illustrations found on Staples brand packaging, I took it upon myself to create a vector version.

The result was a fairly convincing rendering that scaled infinitely in a 700kb vector file.

By tracing the original image, I was able to maintain the core proportions and perspective. I used a combination of gradient fills and gradient meshes to effectively recreate the lighting and form. In order to avoid any raster effects, a simple shape blend was used for the spotlight on the top.
